Ohio laws and handbook points
Points from Ohio law and the Ohio driver handbook, each taken from one of our Ohio practice questions with its source. Practice material, not the state test.
Permits and graduated licensing
You passed the vision and knowledge tests today. How long do you have to buy your temporary permit (TIPIC)?
Answer: 60 days. After passing the tests, buy the TIPIC within 60 days. If you wait longer, you must pass the tests again.
Other choices: 12 months. Twelve months is much longer than the deadline. 30 days. Thirty days is shorter than the real deadline.

Alcohol and drugs
You are arrested and a breath test shows you over the limit for the first time. How long is your administrative license suspension?
Answer: 90 days. A first test over the limit starts a 90 day suspension right away. Longer ones follow for repeat cases.
Other choices: 1 year. One year is the suspension for a first refusal, not for a first test over the limit. Up to 10 days. That is far shorter than the suspension Ohio sets for a first test over the limit.

Insurance
What is Ohio's minimum coverage for one person's injury or death?
Answer: $25,000. The minimum is 25,000 dollars for one person, 50,000 for two or more, and 25,000 for property damage.
Other choices: $5,000. Five thousand dollars is below Ohio's minimum. $10,000. Ten thousand dollars is below the Ohio minimum.

Speed and following distance
After a study, what higher limit may Ohio set on some two-lane rural state routes?
Answer: 60 mph. The director of transportation may raise the usual 55 mph to 60 mph on a two-lane state route.
Other choices: 65 mph. Sixty-five mph is the expressway limit, not the two-lane state route limit. 45 mph. Forty-five mph is lower than the default.

Parking
You are on a one-way street. Where may you park?
Answer: At either curb, within 12 inches. On a one-way street you may park within 12 inches of the right or left curb. Traffic moves in one direction only, so either side works, but local rules may limit it.
Other choices: Only at the right curb of the street. You have two choices on a one-way street, because traffic moves one way and either curb is safe. Only at the left curb. The left curb is allowed too; either side works if you stay within 12 inches of the curb.

Right of way
A school bus stops with red lights on a divided four-lane road. Who must stop?
Answer: Traffic going the same way as the bus. Where a road has four or more lanes, only traffic behind the bus must stop; oncoming drivers may pass. On narrower roads both directions must stop, so count the lanes.
Other choices: Only vehicles in the left-hand lane. A single lane is not the only one that stops. Only vehicles in the right lane. The stop rule follows direction of travel, not lane; every vehicle behind the bus must stop, not just the right lane.

Sharing the road
You come up behind a farm tractor on a country road. Why pass with extra care?
Answer: The operator may not hear you. Farm machinery operators may not hear approaching vehicles, so pass with care. Loud engines can drown out your horn, and rural roads add hidden driveways.
Other choices: It is very fast. Farm machinery is slow, not very fast. It is illegal to pass it. Passing farm machinery is not illegal.
Sources: ORC 4511.31; Driver handbook, Section 9: Sharing the Road.
Emergencies
Your car begins to skid on a wet road. What should you do?
Answer: Ease off the pedals and steer into it. Take your foot off the brake and gas and steer the way the rear is sliding. Braking hard in a skid makes it worse.
Other choices: Press the accelerator harder. More gas adds power to wheels that already lack grip. Brake as hard as you can. Hard braking locks the wheels and makes the skid worse.

Turns and lanes
What is the hand signal for a left turn?
Answer: Arm straight out. Hold your arm straight out to the left to signal a left turn. Right is up, and stop or slow is down, so do not mix up the three.
Other choices: Arm pointing up. Arm pointing up shows a right turn, so using it for a left would tell drivers behind you the wrong thing. Arm waving. Waving an arm is not a standard hand signal; drivers behind you would not know your plan.

Pavement markings
What do white lane lines separate?
Answer: Traffic going the same way. White lane lines separate traffic moving the same way, and yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite ways. The color tells you who might be coming toward you.
Other choices: Bicycles from sidewalks. Bicycles and sidewalks are not divided by lane lines. Parked cars from moving cars. Parked cars are not what lane lines divide.
