Permito

For parents: how to help and how to pay

Your teen asked you to look at Permito. Here is what it is, what it costs and how to help, in about a minute.

What Permito is

Permito is a study app for the written driver’s permit test. It has practice questions for your teen’s state, mock exams, explained answers, a road sign trainer and a readiness score that shows what to study next.

It is practice only. It is not affiliated with any DMV or government agency, and it cannot promise a pass. We simply think steady practice is the best way to get ready.

The three passes

  • Week Pass, $7.99. One state, 7 days of unlimited mock exams and review. A low-cost way to start, or a last push before the test.
  • Permit Pass, $24.99, recommended. One state. Unlimited mock exams and review. Lasts 90 days, or until your teen marks the test as passed. If your teen takes the test and does not pass, the Permit Pass can add 30 more days, once.
  • Family Pass, $49.99. Every state, never expires. On iPhone it is shared with your family through Apple Family Sharing: each person uses it on their own iPhone, by tapping Restore purchases. On Android it works for the Google account that bought it.

All three are one-time purchases. There is no subscription and nothing renews. If your teen buys a second pass for the same state while one is running, the new one starts when the first ends, so no days are lost. Prices are US prices; the App Store shows the final amount before anything is charged. Your teen can start free, with a short check-in, a mock exam a day and every road sign.

How to buy

There is no web checkout, so there is nothing to pay on this page. A pass is bought in the app, through Apple or Google. There are two ways to pay from your own phone.

  1. Ask to Buy. Your teen taps Buy on their own iPhone. Apple sends the request to your phone, you approve it and pay, and the pass lands on your teen’s phone. This works for every pass when your teen is in your Apple Family group.
  2. Family Pass. Buy the Family Pass on your own iPhone. Your teen opens Permito on theirs and taps Restore purchases. The Week Pass and Permit Pass do not work this way, because Apple does not share them through Family Sharing.

On Android, the Family Pass works for the Google account that bought it; Google Play does not share in-app purchases with a family. A parent can buy it on their teen’s phone, or approve the purchase with Google Family Link when purchase approvals are on.

Your teen can also send you their progress from the Progress tab, as a one-page picture through Messages or Mail.

Privacy for teens

There is no account, no ads and no tracking. Your teen’s progress stays on their phone. Permito keeps a random device ID and the purchase record, and counts anonymous usage under a separate random ID that can be turned off. Learners under 13 are not set up, and nothing is saved for them. Read the privacy policy for details.
