  • Alcohol and drugs

Where may an opened bottle of alcohol be kept in a car with no trunk?

Answer: Where riders seldom sit. In a vehicle without a trunk, an opened container must be in an area not normally used by riders. A glove box does not count.

Other choices: Under the front seat. Under the seat is within reach of the driver and riders. In the glove compartment. A glove box counts as an area used by riders.

    Sources: Wis. Stat. 346.935(3).

  • Insurance

What is the lowest liability cover for one person hurt or killed in Wisconsin?

Answer: $25,000 per person. Wisconsin needs $25,000 for one person hurt and $50,000 for two or more people. Property damage needs at least $10,000 of cover.

Other choices: $10,000. Ten thousand is the property damage minimum, not the injury minimum. $100,000 per person. This is far above the legal minimum.

Sources: Wis. Stat. 344.33(2); Wis. Stat. 344.01(2)(d).

  • Speed and following distance

What does Wisconsin say about driving faster than conditions allow?

Answer: No one may drive faster than is reasonable and prudent. No one may drive faster than is reasonable and prudent. A driver must slow at intersections, curves, hills, railroad crossings, and near children or workers.

Other choices: Speed is fine if it is under the limit. A speed under the limit can still be too fast for rain, fog, or traffic. Speed matters only at night. The rule applies day and night.

  • Parking

How close to the nearest rail at a railroad crossing may a vehicle stand?

Answer: Not within 25 feet. No one may stop or leave a vehicle standing within 25 feet of the nearest rail at a railroad crossing.

Other choices: Not nearer than 15 feet. Fifteen feet is the closest stopping spot for a bus, not the parking limit. Not nearer than 10 feet. Ten feet is the hydrant gap, which is far too close for a crossing with trains.

    Sources: Wis. Stat. 346.52(1)(i).

  • Right of way

When does a school bus with amber and red lights turn on its amber lights before a stop in a 45 mph zone?

Answer: 300 feet or more ahead. A bus with amber and red lights turns on the amber lights at least 300 feet before stopping in a 45 mph zone, or 100 feet in a slower one.

Other choices: Right when the bus stops. The amber lights warn drivers before the stop. At least 20 feet before the stop. Twenty feet is the stopping gap for other drivers.

  • Sharing the road

Answer: Two years. A move over violation that damages property brings 90 days to one year. Bodily harm brings 180 days to two years, and a death brings two years.

Other choices: A suspension of one year. One year is the top of the range for property damage only. Six months. Six months is within the range for bodily harm, not death.

Sources: Wis. Stat. 343.30(1o); Wis. Stat. 346.17(2).

  • Turns and lanes

A car ahead drives straight on a two-lane road. May you pass it on the right?

Answer: No, the road has only one lane in your direction. A driver may pass on the right only if the vehicle ahead is turning left or making a U-turn, or the road has room for two lines of traffic going the same way.

Other choices: Yes, if you use the shoulder. Passing by driving onto an unpaved shoulder is not allowed. Yes, if the car ahead is slow. A slow car ahead does not make a pass on the right legal.

  • Traffic signals

You reach a signal that flashes red. What must you do?

Answer: Stop, then proceed when clear. A flashing red signal requires a stop. The driver then goes under the same rules that apply after a stop at a stop sign.

Other choices: Stop only if cars are coming. A full stop is required every time. Slow down and go through with care. Slowing down is the rule for a flashing yellow.
