You are found responsible for going 13 mph over the limit. How many points are added?

Answer: 3 points. Speeding by 11 to 15 mph over the limit adds three points. Faster speeds add more, up to four points for more than 15 mph over.

Other choices: 2 points. Two points are for speeding 6 to 10 mph over the limit. 4 points. Four points go with the fastest speeding band, well above the limit.

  • Alcohol and drugs

Where in a car with a trunk must opened alcohol be kept?

Answer: In the trunk. Open alcohol must not be in the passenger area. In a car with a trunk, it belongs in the trunk.

Other choices: Under the front seat. Under the seat is still the passenger area. In the cup holder. A cup holder is within reach of the driver.

  • Insurance

What must a driver do after a crash on a public road?

Answer: Stop and give name, address and registration. A driver in a crash must stop at the scene and stay there until giving name, address and registration to the other driver or police.

Other choices: Give only a phone number. The law asks for name, address and registration. Leave if the damage is small. The duty applies to all crashes.

  • Speed and following distance

What happens to the fine for a moving violation in a Michigan work zone?

Answer: The fine is doubled. A moving violation in a work zone, at an emergency scene, or in a school zone near school hours carries a fine double the usual amount.

Other choices: The fine stays the same. The law raises the fine in these zones. The fine becomes a warning. Michigan does not swap fines for warnings in work zones.

  • Parking

Outside a city, how close may you park to a crash that police are attending?

Answer: No closer than 500 feet. Outside a city or village, do not park closer than 500 feet to a fire or to a crash that police are working.

Other choices: No closer than 50 feet. Fifty feet is the distance from a railroad crossing. No closer than 100 feet. A hundred feet is much less than the law requires at a crash scene.

Sources: MCL 257.674; Driver handbook, Chapter 4: Traffic Laws.

  • Right of way

You drive a bus with 20 riders to a railroad crossing with no lights or train in view. What must you do?

Answer: Stop, look and listen, then cross when safe. Buses with 16 or more riders must stop before a railroad crossing. So must vehicles that carry passengers for hire or placarded cargo. They cross only when it is safe.

Other choices: Stop only if the crossing has a gate. The stop is required with or without gates. Slow down and cross if no train is visible. A bus this size must come to a full stop first.

  • Sharing the road

What is the charge for breaking the move-over law and injuring an emergency worker?

Answer: A felony charge. A driver who breaks the move-over law and hurts a worker faces a felony charge.

Other choices: A civil infraction only. A civil infraction is the usual charge, but injury raises it. Only a parking ticket. The charge is far more serious than a parking ticket.

Sources: MCL 257.653a; Driver handbook, Chapter 4: Traffic Laws.

  • Emergencies

A fire truck with red lights and a siren comes up behind you on a two-lane road. What should you do?

Answer: Pull to the right edge and stop until it passes. When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren, drivers pull to the right edge of the road, clear of intersections, and stop until it has passed.

Other choices: Stop where you are in the middle of the lane. Stopping in the lane would block the fire truck. Speed up to stay ahead of the truck. Racing ahead blocks the truck and risks a crash.

Sources: MCL 257.653; Driver handbook, Chapter 4: Traffic Laws.

  • Turns and lanes

Where may a driver enter or leave a limited-access road?

Answer: Only at the marked ramps. Michigan law allows a driver to enter or leave a limited-access roadway only at posted ramps. Crossovers in the median are for emergency and state vehicles.

Other choices: At any gap in the median. Median crossovers are for emergency and road vehicles. At any side road with a stop sign. These roads have no cross traffic, so entry and exit points are limited to ramps built for the purpose.

  • Traffic signals

You are at a red light on a two-way street and want to turn left onto a two-way street. May you turn on red?

Answer: No, only into a one-way street. A left turn on red is allowed only onto a one-way street that carries traffic to the left. A two-way street does not qualify.

Other choices: Yes, after stopping and yielding. The exception needs a one-way street to turn into. Yes, if no cars are coming. Clear roads do not create an exception.
