Georgia laws and handbook points
Points from Georgia law and the Georgia driver handbook, each taken from one of our Georgia practice questions with its source. Practice material, not the state test.
Permits and graduated licensing
How many supervised practice hours must a Georgia teen log, including night hours?
Answer: 40 hours, with at least 6 at night. Georgia teens need 40 hours of supervised driving, at least 6 of them at night, certified by an affidavit. Night practice matters because visibility and fatigue make darkness harder for novices.
Other choices: 60 hours, with at least 10 at night. That is more than Georgia requires. 30 hours, with at least 4 at night. The classroom hours are 30, but practice requires more.

Alcohol and drugs
What blood alcohol level makes a driver under 21 irrefutably under the influence in Georgia?
Answer: 0.02 or more. For drivers under 21 the Georgia limit is 0.02. It is set low because young drivers are at greater crash risk and drinking is illegal for them anyway.
Other choices: 0.08 or more. That is the adult limit, which is four times higher. 0.04 or more. Four is the level used for commercial drivers, not for young drivers.

Insurance
After a crash claim, how can an insured driver avoid a suspension order?
Answer: The insurer files Form SR-21. To avoid the order, the driver's insurer files Form SR-21 to show liability coverage at the time of the crash. A hearing may be asked for within ten days.
Other choices: Wait for the order to run out. The order stands until the driver acts, so waiting leads to a suspension. Sign a statement of fault. Admitting fault does not help and may add trouble with the claim.

Speed and following distance
A driver is convicted of going 87 mph on an interstate. What extra cost applies?
Answer: A $200 state fee added to fines. A $200 state fee is added to local fines for 85 mph or faster on any road, or 75 mph on a two-lane road. Unpaid fees lead to suspension.
Other choices: Only the local court fine. The state fee is added to the local fine. A $50 fee that can be waived. The fee is $200, and the $50 amount is only a reinstatement cost.

Parking
How far from a fire station driveway is parking banned on the same side?
Answer: Within 20 feet. Cars may not park close to a fire station driveway on the same side of the street. On the other side the ban reaches 75 feet from the point opposite it.
Other choices: Within 75 feet. Seventy-five feet is the zone on the opposite side of the street. Within 40 feet. The same-side ban is shorter than that.

Right of way
Which way does traffic move around a roundabout?
Answer: Counterclockwise, and entering cars yield. Roundabout traffic goes counterclockwise. Cars entering yield to cars already circling, and drivers enter and leave to the right, which keeps traffic flowing in one direction.
Other choices: Either way, depending on the lane. All lanes move the same way around the circle. Counterclockwise, and circling cars yield. Cars already in the circle have the right of way, so they do not yield to entering cars.

Sharing the road
A school bus ahead turns on its flashing amber lights. What do the lights tell you?
Answer: It is about to stop, so slow down and prepare. Flashing amber lights give advance warning that the school bus is about to load or unload children. Slow down and be ready to stop when the red lights begin.
Other choices: The bus is out of service today. Amber lights are a stop warning, and they do not mean the bus has left its route. You must stop right now. Stopping is required once the red lights and stop arm come on, not at the amber warning.

Turns and lanes
Which hand signal tells drivers behind you that you are stopping?
Answer: Arm pointed down out the window. Arm straight out means a left turn, bent up means a right turn, and pointing down means stop. These signals are used when turn signals or brake lights are not working.
Other choices: Arm straight out to the left. A straight left arm signals a left turn, so drivers behind would expect you to turn instead of stop. Arm bent upward at the elbow. A raised bent arm means a right turn.

Pavement markings
There is a white stop line before a crosswalk at a stop sign. Where should you stop?
Answer: Behind the stop line. Stop behind the stop line when one is painted. It keeps your car out of the crosswalk and gives pedestrians room to cross safely.
Other choices: At the stop sign, even if past the line. The sign may be beyond the line; the line marks the stopping point. Anywhere before the intersection. Stop at the marked line, not at a spot you choose.

Traffic signals
What is the correct response to a pedestrian hybrid beacon showing flashing red?
Answer: Stop, then go when the crosswalk is clear. A pedestrian hybrid beacon runs flashing yellow, steady yellow, double red, then flashing red. On flashing red, stop and go once the crosswalk is clear.
Other choices: Stop and wait for the green phase. The beacon has no green phase; it goes dark after flashing red. Slow down and keep going. Slowing is for the steady yellow phase.
