Colorado laws and handbook points
Points from Colorado law and the Colorado driver handbook, each taken from one of our Colorado practice questions with its source. Practice material, not the state test.
Permits and graduated licensing
Who may sign the affidavit of liability for a driver under 18?
Answer: A parent or other responsible adult. A parent or guardian signs a form that makes them answer for the young driver. Another responsible adult may sign it too, before DMV staff or a notary.
Other choices: Any friend of the young driver. A friend is not a responsible adult who agrees to accept the liability. A driving instructor only, no one else. Instructors do not sign for a minor, since the form needs a guardian or similar adult.

Alcohol and drugs
How many license points does a first DWAI conviction add?
Answer: 8. A first DWAI conviction brings 8 license points, a fine of $200 to $500 and jail from 2 to 180 days.
Other choices: 4. Four points is for careless driving. 12. Twelve points is for a DUI conviction.

Insurance
What is the least property damage coverage in Colorado?
Answer: $15,000. Property damage coverage must be at least $15,000 in any one crash. Injury limits are $25,000 and $50,000, so property is the lowest of the three.
Other choices: $25,000. Twenty-five thousand dollars is the injury limit for one person. $50,000. Fifty thousand dollars is the injury limit for all people hurt.

Speed and following distance
What happens to fines for speeding in a work zone?
Answer: They are doubled. Like school zones, work zones carry doubled fines for speeding. Obey the posted limit and any flagger, since workers are close to traffic.
Other choices: They stay the same. The law doubles them. They are waived. Work zone fines are never waived, since workers on the road need drivers to slow down.

Parking
How close to the curb must a parallel-parked car be in Colorado?
Answer: Within 12 inches. When parallel parking, keep your vehicle within 12 inches of the curb. That keeps the travel lane open so traffic is not blocked or slowed.
Other choices: Within 24 inches. Twenty-four inches is twice the allowed gap. Within 3 feet. Three feet leaves the car too far out.

Right of way
You stall on a railroad crossing and no train is in sight. What should you do?
Answer: Get out, move away and call the number. A stalled car on the tracks is a deadly risk. Get everyone out and far from the crossing at once, even with no train in view, then call the blue ENS number.
Other choices: Stay in the car and wait for a tow truck. Waiting inside the car is dangerous, since a train may come. Keep trying to restart the engine. Restarting the engine wastes time that you may not have.

Sharing the road
How close may you come to a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing?
Answer: No closer than 20 feet. A driver must stop at least 20 feet before a school bus with red lights flashing, and stay stopped until the lights stop flashing.
Other choices: No closer than 10 feet. Ten feet is half the required distance. No closer than 5 feet. Five feet puts you beside the bus where children cross, so it is far too close for safety.

Emergencies
With ABS, how should you brake in an emergency?
Answer: Press hard and keep pressing. With anti-lock brakes, apply hard, firm pressure and do not let up when the pedal pushes back. The ABS works only while the pedal is down.
Other choices: Release the pedal when it vibrates. The system works only with the pedal pressed down. Pump the pedal many times. Pumping defeats the ABS.

Turns and lanes
How far away must an oncoming vehicle be when you return to the right lane after passing?
Answer: More than 200 feet. A driver must be back in the right lane while any oncoming car is still more than 200 feet away. A longer gap is safer.
Other choices: More than 100 feet. One hundred feet is the intersection distance. More than 50 feet. Fifty feet is far too close for a safe return.

Pavement markings
A solid yellow line is on your side and a broken yellow line is on the far side. Do you have the right to pass?
Answer: No, the solid line on your side bans it. You may pass only if the broken line is on your side and it is safe. With a solid line on your side, passing is banned.
Other choices: Yes, since one line is broken. The line on your side is what counts. Yes, but only after dark. The time of day has no effect on the lines.

Numbers copied from site to site are often out of date, so we show only numbers seen on the agency’s own page.

No. They are our own practice questions, written from the Colorado driver handbook and vehicle code. Permito is not affiliated with any DMV or government agency.

How far behind another vehicle must you switch to low beams?
Within 200 feet. Dim your high beams before an oncoming vehicle comes within 500 feet. Use low beams when you are within 200 feet behind another vehicle. Sources: Driver handbook, Night Driving.
You park facing uphill on a street with a curb. Which way should the front wheels point?
Away from the curb. On an uphill street with a curb, angle the front wheels out toward the road, so a car that starts rolling backward is stopped by the curb. Set the parking brake as well. Sources: Driver handbook, Parking.
