Arizona laws and handbook points

Points from Arizona law and the Arizona driver handbook, each taken from one of our Arizona practice questions with its source. Practice material, not the state test.

  • Permits and graduated licensing

You are 16 and got your permit two months ago. A friend says you can apply for class G now. Is that right?

Answer: No, you must hold the permit six months. A class G applicant needs both age 16 and six months on the permit. After two months, four more months must pass before the teen can apply for the license.

Other choices: Yes, if you finish a driving course. A course can meet the training rule but does not shorten the permit period. Yes, because you are already 16. Turning 16 is only one requirement, and the permit time must be met too.

  • Alcohol and drugs

What happens to a license after a first refusal of the DUI breath test?

Answer: It is suspended for twelve months. A driver who refuses or does not complete the DUI test loses the license for twelve months, or twenty-four for a repeat refusal within seven years. A test of 0.08 or more costs at least ninety days.

Other choices: It is suspended for twenty-four months. Twenty-four months applies only to a second refusal inside the 84 month window. It is untouched until a conviction. The suspension follows the refusal itself and does not wait for the court case.

  • Insurance

What must a driver do about a load carried in a truck bed or on a trailer?

Answer: Fasten and cover it well. A vehicle may not be driven on a road unless its load is built or fastened so nothing drops, sifts, leaks, or escapes. Secure and cover loads on trucks and trailers every time.

Other choices: Tie it down only on freeways. The rule applies on every highway, street, and roadway, not only freeways. Drive slowly and keep it uncovered. Slow speed does not satisfy the duty to keep a load from escaping.

Sources: ARS 28-1098; Driver handbook, Secure and Cover Loads.

  • Speed and following distance

What happens to a speeding fine in a posted Arizona state highway work zone when workers are present?

Answer: The fine is doubled. In a posted state highway work zone with workers present, a speeding fine is doubled by an equal added assessment. The limit protects both drivers and the people doing the work.

Other choices: The fine is cut in half. Fines go up in work zones and never down, because workers stand near traffic. A warning replaces it. A warning is not the rule, since the fine is doubled when workers are present.

  • Parking

You find a curb space 10 feet from a fire hydrant. May you park there?

Answer: No, stay 15 feet or more away. A driver may not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. The clear space lets firefighters reach the hydrant without delay.

Other choices: Yes, if you stay inside the car. Staying in the car does not remove the parking ban near a hydrant. Yes, 10 feet is plenty of room. Ten feet is inside the legal zone that must stay clear around a hydrant.

Sources: ARS 28-873; Driver handbook, Parking: Prohibited Parking.

  • Right of way

What should a driver do when approaching a roundabout as a large truck enters it?

Answer: Yield to the truck. A driver approaching a roundabout must yield to vehicles already in it and to large vehicles that enter at the same time. Do not try to pass large trucks inside the roundabout.

Other choices: Enter first because you drive a car. Large vehicles are given way to when they enter at the same time as a car. Pass the truck inside the circle. Drivers should not try to pass large trucks inside a roundabout.

  • Sharing the road

Which stopped vehicles does the Arizona Move Over law cover?

Answer: Any vehicle with flashing lights. The law covers any stopped vehicle with flashing lights. That includes police, tow, road crew, and private vehicles, on freeways and city streets.

Other choices: Police cars and sheriff cars only. The law covers many vehicles besides police cars, wherever flashing lights are on. Vehicles stopped on interstates only. The law reaches multiple lane highways, city roads, and ordinary streets too.

Sources: ARS 28-775; Driver handbook, Rules of the Road: Following Emergency Vehicles.

  • Emergencies

At a traffic stop, what should a driver do before reaching for the license and registration?

Answer: Wait for the officer to say so. At a traffic stop, pull off when safe, shut off the engine, and keep your hands visible. Do not reach for papers until the officer asks.

Other choices: Reach into the glove box at once. A sudden reach can alarm an officer who cannot see what you are reaching for. Step out of the car to show them. Stay in the car unless the officer tells you to step out.

  • Turns and lanes

You are within 100 feet of a railroad crossing on a two-lane road and want to pass a slow car. May you?

Answer: No, not within 100 feet of it. A driver may not pass on the left within 100 feet of an intersection or railroad crossing, near a bridge or tunnel with a blocked view, or on a curve or hill where the view ahead is blocked.

Other choices: Yes, if you speed up to finish. Speeding up to finish a pass is unlawful and makes the pass more dangerous. Yes, if the road looks clear. A clear road does not lift the rule that applies near a crossing.

Sources: ARS 28-726; Driver handbook, Passing: Do Not Pass.

  • Pavement markings

You are on a road with double solid yellow lines in the center. May you cross them to pass a slow car?

Answer: No, passing is barred both ways. Double solid yellow lines mean passing is not allowed in either direction. A driver may cross them only to turn left.

Other choices: Yes, if you signal first. A signal does not make crossing the lines lawful for a pass. Yes, if no car is coming. The ban applies even when the road ahead is clear of oncoming cars.
