Alabama laws and handbook points
Points from Alabama law and the Alabama driver handbook, each taken from one of our Alabama practice questions with its source. Practice material, not the state test.
Permits and graduated licensing
You are 17 and licensed for eight months, with no moving violation in six months. Which license do you hold?
Answer: An unrestricted Stage III license. A 17-year-old whose license is six months old, with no moving violation in that time, holds an unrestricted license. The midnight limit no longer applies.
Other choices: A license with a midnight curfew. The midnight limit is part of Stage II and no longer applies. A Stage II license until age 18. Stage II ends early at 17 once the six-month rules are met.

Alcohol and drugs
At what blood alcohol level is an adult over the legal limit in Alabama?
Answer: 0.08 percent or higher. In Alabama, it is unlawful to drive with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more. Drivers under 21 face a lower limit.
Other choices: 0.04 percent, for truckers. Four hundredths is the limit for commercial drivers, not other adults. 0.10 percent or more. Ten hundredths was the old limit that many states used before lowering it.

Insurance
What is the penalty for driving without liability insurance in Alabama?
Answer: A Class C misdemeanor and a suspended registration. It is a crime. The charge is a Class C misdemeanor. The state also suspends the car's registration until the owner shows proof of coverage.
Other choices: A $5 fine for each day uninsured. Alabama does not set a daily fine for driving uninsured. A felony with a year in state prison. A felony is far above what the statute provides for this offense.
Sources: Ala. Code 32-7A-16; Ala. Code 32-7A-12; Driver handbook, Chapter 6: Traffic Laws, Mandatory Liability Insurance Law.
Speed and following distance
You follow another vehicle at night. Within what distance must you lower your high beams?
Answer: 200 feet behind it. A driver must lower the high beams when an oncoming car is 500 feet away. The limit is 200 feet when following another car.
Other choices: 500 feet. Five hundred feet is the distance for oncoming vehicles. 100 feet. One hundred feet is shorter than the distance the rule sets.
Sources: Ala. Code 32-5-242; Driver handbook, Chapter 7: Adjusting to Driving Conditions, Night Driving.
Parking
How close to a fire station driveway may you stand a vehicle?
Answer: Not within 20 feet. A vehicle may not stand within 20 feet of a fire station driveway. Across the street the limit is 75 feet when signs are posted.
Other choices: Not within 50 feet. Fifty feet is the distance used for railroad crossings. Not within 100 feet. One hundred feet is not the Alabama distance for fire stations.
Sources: Ala. Code 32-5A-137.
Right of way
On a one-way street at a red light, you want to turn left onto another one-way street. What does Alabama allow?
Answer: A left turn on red, after a stop. After stopping at a red light, a driver may turn left from a one-way street into a one-way street unless a sign forbids it.
Other choices: A left turn without stopping. A full stop is required first. A left turn from any two-way street. The exception covers only one-way to one-way streets.
Sources: Ala. Code 32-5A-32; Driver handbook, Chapter 6: Traffic Laws, Stopping.
Sharing the road
A driver cannot move over for a stopped emergency vehicle on a multilane road. How much must speed drop below the limit?
Answer: 15 mph or more. If a driver cannot move over, speed must drop to at least 15 mph below the posted limit. The cut protects workers and officers on the roadside.
Other choices: At least 10 mph. Ten applies on a two-lane road only when the posted limit is 20 or lower. At least 25 mph. The law does not ask for a cut as large as 25.

Emergencies
You are in a crash that injures someone. May you move your car before an officer arrives?
Answer: No, wait until an officer says to move it. A vehicle in an injury crash may not be moved until an officer says so. A no-injury crash lets a sober driver move it.
Other choices: Yes, to the nearest parking lot. A car in an injury crash stays put until police direct otherwise. Yes, if you take photos first. Taking photos does not change the rule.
Sources: Ala. Code 32-10-1.
Turns and lanes
When may a driver pass on the right in Alabama?
Answer: If the car ahead turns left or lanes allow. Passing on the right is allowed when the car ahead is turning left or the road has two or more lanes in your direction.
Other choices: Only on rural roads with no traffic. The rule rests on the road layout, not on rural or city roads. Any time the right shoulder is free. Passing by driving off the pavement onto the shoulder is not allowed.
Sources: Ala. Code 32-5A-83; Driver handbook, Chapter 6: Traffic Laws, Passing.
Traffic signals
Your light turns green, but a car is still in the intersection finishing a turn. What should you do?
Answer: Wait for it to clear, because you must yield to it. A driver with a green light must still yield to vehicles and pedestrians already lawfully in the intersection or an adjacent crosswalk.
Other choices: Go around the car on the right. Driving around it inside the intersection is unsafe. Sound the horn until it moves. Honking does not make it safe or give you the right of way.
